Album: Penglai School History Museum

(Under development.)

This is a sequence of images from the museum located on the Quancheng campus of Jinan University in Panglai City, Yantai District, Shandong Province.

The museum chronicles the history of schools first started in 1864 by American Presbyterian missionaries, Hunter Corbett and Calvin Wilson Mateer. It later developed into Tengchow College (1884) and is regarded to be the first college of higher education (Western style) in China. Through the continuing guidance of Mateer, it moved to Weifang in 1904 and merged with other schools in a united efforts with British, American, and Canadian missionary organizations. A later move to Jinan (1909) created Shantang Christian University, then Cheeloo University. Eventually, present day prestigious Shandong University was formed from these modest beginnings.
