Building Bridges between East and West through Education and Cultural Exchange
Album: Mark Twain House (Hartford, CT)
Located in Hartford, Connecticut, the home of Mark Twain and his wife, Olivia, was built on property just adjacent to that of Harriet Beecher Stowe, the famous writer of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. These photos were taken in October, 2014. Unfortunately, we could not get access to the Stowe residence on this occasion.

In Hartford, Connecticut, we stopped to visit the fascinating house of the famous writer, Mark Twain.
This is not the house… just the Visitor Center. Many people come here each day. We had to wait for our tour.
This was October, 2014. The colors were lovely. We enjoyed the wait.
And, we were surprised to find here a lovely red maple leaf. They are common in the east, but not back in Regina.
We entered the Visitor Center to buy our tickets, and wait our turn.
Who should welcome us? Mark Twain himself, constructed of Lego blocks. (My grandson should see this!!)
Of course, everyone is encouraged to purchase some memorabilia. Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn?
Mark Twain is noted for his wit and insightful perspectives. Here he rewrites a proverb from the Bible.
A number of his perspectives are carved into the walls of the Visitor Center.
It says: Always do Right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.
Finally our group was ready to tour the house he had built here in Hartford.
The grounds are lovely, and the house itself is of exceptional design.
Our guide explained that it was really his wife’s money that financed the house.
Unfortunately, photos were not allowed inside. The top window here is Twain’s writing studio.
The house is really of very unique and remarkable design.
What was very surprising to us, is that the Twains built their house to be near that of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
As author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, HB Stowe was the most famous writer in America when Twain was starting out.
