A Chefoo School Celebration, Yantai 2018

Yantai City, Shandong Province, celebrated the establishment (1881) of an internationally famous boarding school for children of expatriates in China during colonial times. The official opening of a major exhibit in city museum included the welcoming back of former students and their families in March 2018.

Visit Yantai Chefoo School 2016

Part one of a two-part adventure (2016 and 2018) in Yantai, Shandong Province as I searched out some history of early Westerners in China 150 years ago. I was invited to give a lecture to students and staff of a military college that now occupies the historic site of Chefoo School (founded 1881). Later I was invited back as the city featured its own much forgotten history in a massive museum display.

With the arrival of railways and the development of roads, one major waterway became an obstacle. That was the mighty Yangtze River (or the ChongJiang, as it is know to the Chinese themselves).

Why would anyone visit Jiangmen?

for years, I had very little interest in China. I won’t recount the images… but, if you (the reader) are anywhere near my generation or come from my culture, you probably share most of the same images…. But … I still keep being surprised in China. I continue to venture into new places, with these preconceived images in my mind. Invariably, I set myself up for another surprise.
